Alfred (Al or Red) Michael Caravella died peacefully on August 19, 2020, surrounded by family. Alfred was born in Metuchen, NJ on January 8, 1930 to Frank and Anna Caravella. He was predeceased in death in 2016 by his beloved spouse of 65 years, Kathleen (Kathy or Keenie), 3 brothers, Paul, Peter and Vincent and one sister, Katherine; his grandson, Ethan Schaefer Barton and his son-in-law, Barry Hotz. Al and Kathy lived in Rahway, NJ until 2001, when they moved to Manahawkin, NJ. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Rahway and St. Mary’s of the Pines in Manahawkin. They spent their winters in Fort Myers Beach, FL for many years, where they were members of the Church of Ascension Parish. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, crabbing, painting, gardening, hunting, doing puzzles and playing cards. Alfred had a long career as a golf course superintendent, during which he served as president of the Golf Course Superintendent Association, developed his own strain of grass seed, and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association. He is survived by his sister, Theresa, his 8 children and their families; Michael A. Caravella (Yvonne), Ellen A. Dazet (Daniel), Patricia C. Barton (Timothy), Christy M. Poles (Steven), Francis A. Caravella (Suzanne), Kathleen Caravella, Linda Hotz, and Peter V. Caravella (Shelly); 19 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. The Caravella Family is extremely grateful to the many friends, extended family, and neighbors who have offered their love and support during this difficult time.
A Memorial Gathering will take place on Friday, August 21, 2020 from 9:30am to 11:30am at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Rd, Manahawkin, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial, will follow, 12pm at St. Mary of the Pines Church, Manahawkin. Due to COVID-19, the funeral home is operating at 25% occupancy capacity as per NJ executive order. Staff will assist with the number of visitors allowed in the building at a time. Please note that social distancing and facemasks are required at all times for attendance.
