Edward Walsh

After a courageous 15-year battle with cancer, our dear Edward “Ed” T. Walsh, aged 67, bravely bid us farewell and joined his beloved son Eddie on May 27, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Originally from New Jersey, Ed grew up in Hazlet with his mother Kathleen, father Edward, and younger brother and sister, Kevin and Sharon. After graduating from Fordham University in 1975 he married his high school sweetheart Patricia in 1977.  Having quickly realized during college that psychology was not his cup of tea, Ed embarked on an illustrious career in the finance industry. He joined Citibank in 1985 and excelled over the next 22 years within various positions, including CFO of Emerging Markets and CEO of Emerging Markets, Consumer Products. His job focused on international markets and brought him to London for one year and Belgium for seven.  Ed’s tenure at Citibank also afforded him the opportunity to travel across the globe from Europe, to South America, Australia, and Asia, building lifelong friendships with many remarkable colleagues along the way.

Throughout his life he enjoyed skiing, playing basketball in the driveway with his kids and relaxing with episodes of the original Law & Order. He engaged in spirited family card games of Pinochle and delighted in waking up to a strong pot of coffee to pair with his latest copy of the Wall Street Journal.  Ed was renowned in his inner circle for his quick wit, always armed with a smart remark, and his penchant for nicknaming (usually with love) most anyone he came across. He enjoyed teasing his family and friends with some good-natured ribbing and his animated facial expressions combined with his sarcastic retorts were classic. He reveled in entertaining people with the same jokes over and over again, which always gave him a hearty chuckle.

After retiring in 2007, "everyday was Saturday" for Ed and he focused on his favorite things: cycling (above all else), golfing in Naples, spending time in LBI at the beach with his family, cheering on the Giants, listening to classic rock (in concert and at home on his record player), and riding around in his prized Aston Martin, a retirement gift to himself.  Ed also dedicated many hours of his free time to serve on the board of directors of the nonprofit MGFA, first as a member and eventually as chairman.

Ed is in good company, and will be reunited with his adored eldest son, Eddie, his sister, Sharon Chess, and his parents, Kathleen and Edward. Ed will be forever loved and missed by his devoted wife, Patricia, children Tricia, Patrick, and Ryan, daughters-in-law Annie and Jen, grandsons Calvin Edward and Conor Edward, brother Kevin (Marian), brother-in-law Jay Chess (Judy), and many other wonderful brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050 on Thursday, June 17th at 12 pm.  If you would like to honor Ed’s life, please consider donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, especially for research aimed towards improving the treatment and outcomes for those patients with prostate or ovarian cancer caused by a BRCA2 mutation ( http://mskcc.convio.net/goto/BRCA2 ).  If you are able and willing, please donate blood and platelets – doing so is truly lifesaving to others and Ed benefited greatly from the generosity of many selfless donors. Wear light blue in honor of those battling prostate cancer and if you have a known BRCA mutation please make sure to attend routine checkups so we can snuff out this unforgiving disease.

The Time of Remembrance will be streamed on the funeral home Facebook page beginning at 2pm. To access the Facebook page click on the following link: https://www.facebook.com/maxwelltobiefuneralhome
