Elizabeth “Betty” A. (Shinn ) Nickel
Has left us Sunday July 1, 2018 peacefully in her son's arms.
Betty was a life-long resident of Manahawkin, New Jersey where she resided until she was 101. She traveled to many places and lived with her son and daughter-in-law along with Molly, their Chocolate Lab of 5 years. Betty has said many times “it took me a hundred years to love a dog”. She recently became a resident at the Seacrest Village care facility after suffering from a fall. While there she had made quite a few more friends and enjoyed her all-time favorite hobby, BINGO. Betty was loved by many in addition to being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. At age 16 Betty worked for NJ Bell telephone Co. and soon after owned William F. Nickel & Son Plumbing and Heating in Manahawkin with her husband William “Willie” Nickel. Along the way she had spent many years volunteering with the Deborah Heart and Lung center fund raising organization and full-time homemaker. In 2016 Betty was honored by her home town as the Grand Marshall of the Stafford Township Founders Day.
Betty is predeceased by her Husband William in 1974. For 44 years after she was well cared for by her son Edward Nickel Sr. and his wife Susan, her grandchildren Ed Jr his wife Tracy, Chanel and her husband Tom and along with Ed & Tracy’s children (Betty’s Great Grand Children), Chelsea, Tyler and Bailey. As her Great Granddaughter Chelsea married not more than a year ago to Nicholas Wilkinson and they are expecting a child in September that would have been Betty’s Great-Great Grandchild!
Betty was also predeceased by her parents Tom and Rachael Shinn, Sisters Louise Burnham, Grace Corliss& brothers Filmore & Tom Shinn all from Manahawkin.
Betty was known favorably as “Aunt Bet” by her many Nieces and Nephews.
When asked, Betty would tell you her secret to a long healthy life was little stress, love of the family and always making great memories, no complaining and plenty of seafood!
Mom, Nana, Betty or Aunt Bet, she will always be missed but she will never be forgotten!
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018, from 11am until her service at 1:30pm at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. Interment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Tuckerton, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to her favorite charity, Deborah Heart and Lung at https://www.deborahfoundation.org/donate
