James B. Callanan

James (Jim) Bernard Callanan, 80 of Manahawkin, passed from this life peacefully on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, surrounded by his family.  Jim was born April 20, 1943 in Newark, NJ to the late William and Mary Callanan.  He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  His exemplary character and unwavering Catholic faith made him a pillar of love and support for his family and friends.  His selflessness and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love and goodwill.

Jim was brought up in Nutley, NJ and attended St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark.  It was in Nutley where he met his teenage sweetheart and eventually his beautiful wife, Dorothy.  In 1969, the two settled in Lakewood, NJ and built a comfortable life, taking pleasure in raising their three boys and lovely daughter.  Jim’s dedication and hard work to ensure the well-being of his loved ones was commendable.  During his early years in Lakewood he balanced a full-time job as an accountant, while serving part-time in the U.S. Army Reserve, and attending night school at Rutgers University in Newark where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting, all in an effort to provide a foundation for his young family.  In 1992, he played a key role in the establishment of a trucking company in Bayville, NJ.  After decades of dedicated service, he retired from his role as its general manager.  Throughout his career, he successfully managed the operations, logistics, and personnel of the company, contributing to its growth and success.

Jim’s spirit of generosity and commitment to advance the common good was evident in the positive impact he has made in the lives of countless individuals throughout his life.  He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manahawkin, Lakewood Blackhawks, Elks Lodge #1432, American Legion Post #166, and the Lakewood Jaycees.   Jim strongly believed in the power of individuals coming together to actively participate in shaping their communities through meaningful contributions.

In 2001, Jim and Dorothy relocated to Manahawkin, NJ and remained there for the past 22 years.  Jim was an avid supporter of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and New York Knicks.  He was committed to staying updated with all games, determined not to miss a single season.  Jim also was an enthusiastic listener of doo wop music, appreciating the harmonies and timeless melodies that characterized the genre.  Above all, Jim valued the relationships with his loved ones and cherished the moments spent together, which brought him immense joy and fulfillment.

Jim is predeceased by his parents, William Callanan Sr., and Mary Callanan (née Finneran).

Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Callanan (née Lubertazza); brother William Callanan Jr. and wife Janet; son James and wife Patricia, grandsons Anthony and Victor, great-granddaughter Imogene; son Brian Callanan; son Kevin Callanan and wife Jennifer, grandsons Justin and Brendan, granddaughter Kaycee, and great-grandson Kaeden; daughter Shannon Branch and husband Jeffrey, grandsons Daniel and Brian.
