Jane L. Haines, age 96, of Manahawkin, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at home in Manahawkin.
Born and raised in the Wissinoming section of Philadelphia, Jane spent her summers at the family shore house in Beach Haven Terrace on Long Beach Island. She continued to live in Philadelphia until she was married in 1946 and moved permanently to Manahawkin. She--along with her husband--was the owner/operator of Haines Garage in Manahawkin.
Jane was a member of the Manahawkin United Methodist Church for 75 years—since 1946! She loved being a Sunday school kindergarten teacher for more than 40 years. Jane was one of the past presidents to the United Methodist Women. She served on numerous church committees over the years. She was active in the church’s quilting club and greatly enjoyed hosting their Christmas party at her home each year.
Always ready to help others, Jane volunteered whenever possible. In the early 60’s, she was an avid fan and supporter of the Stafford Little League. She also served on the Stafford Elementary and Southern Regional PTA for many years. As a member of the Stafford Historical Committee, Jane was one of the original committee members to the Founder’s Day celebration in 1964. Founder’s Day was always a special highlight and tradition for her. She even had the honor of being chosen as one of the Grand Marshalls! In addition, Jane enjoyed her years as a Girl Scout leader for Southern Ocean County. Most recently, she volunteered for the American Red Cross in the canteen during blood drives at the church.
After moving to Manahawkin in 1946, Jane transferred her membership with the Order of the Eastern Star from Philadelphia to Bethlehem Chapter #40, Barnegat, NJ. She served as Past Matron twice and had the distinct honor of being chosen as a Grand Representative to the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a dedicated member for over 70 years.
She was predeceased by her parents Benjamin C. and Eva B. McDade Lownsbury, her husband Herbert W. Haines Sr., her two sons Jay H. Haines and Dale E. Haines, and her brother Jehu Lownsbury.
She is survived by her two sons Herbert W. Haines Jr. (Sue) and Sheridan C. Haines, her daughter Eva J. Haines-Mueller (Rich), her nine grandchildren Moorea (Tom), Bethany (Joseph), Ashley, Stephen (Hayley), David (Elizabeth), Daniel (Stephanie) Michelle (Mike), Keith (Jenn), and Tara, along with her fourteen great grandchildren Aubree, Leanna, Jocee, Daijah, Jahron, Kingston, Jaymason, Hannah, Charlie, Connor, Joey, David, Denny, and Dillon, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
