Maureen H. Dougherty

Maureen H. Dougherty, 78, formerly of Manahawkin, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, in Old Bridge, NJ after a long illness.

Maureen had a strong personality but the biggest heart of gold. She was the fun aunt who loved to spoil her nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed!

Maureen was a graduate of Lacordaire Academy and the University of Massachusetts- Amherst. It was during her time in Massachusetts that she became a loyal Boston Red Sox fan, which was not popular living in New Jersey! But she didn’t care! Maureen had a big laugh that made people smile, and she loved animals, especially the cats she rescued throughout the years.

Maureen was a Passaic County Probation Officer in Paterson, NJ for 33 years. She was the family genealogist and historian who found long-lost relatives for many other people, also. She also assisted many people in improving their computer skills. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police in Passaic County NJ, and a volunteer with Community Relations/Volunteer Services with New Lisbon Developmental Center.

Maureen loved living in Manahawkin, NJ where she especially enjoyed being at the pool in the summers. She was a very talented artist, especially with painting. She was a skilled crafter, decorator, and handyman and loved to “do-it-herself”!

Due to illness, Maureen spent the last few years at the Reformed Church Home in Old Bridge, NJ.

Maureen was pre-deceased by her parents, James and Helen Dougherty, her nephew Michael James Murphy, and brother-in-law Edward Murphy.

She is survived by her sisters Kathleen and Bernadette (Pete), her nieces Allison and Ellen (Dan), her nephews Matthew and Adam, great-niece Zoe and great-nephews Anthony and Zachary.

The family would like to thank all the many people who supported Maureen during her illness, especially Pastor Sam (for his love and kindness towards Maureen) and the staff of the Reformed Church Home. Special thanks to her friends in Perry’s Lake and to longtime friends Millie, Donna, Bernice, and Eileen whose phone calls and cards always made Maureen laugh and smile.

Maureen has requested no services but, if you are so inclined, a donation to her favorite charities, Wounded Warriors Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org or Tunnels to Tower Foundation, at www.t2t.org would be appreciated.
